- Vehicles with trailers setup for the test
- Experienced trainers
The C+E Category
The C+E category of vehicle (Class 1) is the commonly seen articulated vehicle on UK roads. Many of our trainees gaining the non-trailer licences do come back to us to upgrade to the trailer C+E licence. This is usually seen as a promotional move within their working environment.
- An Articulated LGV: vehicle over 7500kg + trailer over 750Kg requires a category C+E (Class 1) trailer licence.
- A medium sized good vehicle (3500kg to 7500kg) + trailer over 750Kg requires a category C1+E trailer licence.
The trailer can be a large articulated trailer, a drawbar trailer, a cargo trailer towed behind a coach.
The rules are complex about Driving Licence Categories, vehicle specifications and the age at which you can drive which affect vehicles with trailers.
C+E and C1+E Driver Training
We offer driver training courses for towing trailers behind an LGV/HGV, bus or coach to satisfy the requirements for the Category E trailer test (previously known as HGV Class 1):
- LGV/HGV C+E – 1:1 courses from 2 to 5 days
We provide preparation for the following trailer tests:
- Medium LGV/PCV with trailer C1+E driver training
- Larger LGV/PCV with trailer C+E driver training
- Coach and cargo trailer training
Our private maneuvering area is a fantastic place to get you started safely away from other traffic in these larger vehicles. No pressure, just get used to the vehicle before going on the open road.
We use Volvo FM rigid vehicles, the FM9 can be used with the drawbar trailer, and a Volvo FM12 Articulated tractor. All are automatic with the Volvo “I Shift” gearbox.
As these vehicles are very similar apart from the chassis layout. This allows for easy transition from rigid (C) to articulated (C+E), to enable the driver to concentrate on the vehicle as a whole and less about learning new controls.
All our vehicles are specifically engineered for driver training and testing, to meet the specification required for the test including the loaded weight.
LGV / HGV Test
We will arrange the test for you, there is an extra charge for a Saturday test date.
You can use on of our vehicles to take the test or a vehicle from your business or employer. An LGV test vehicle is required to be a specific standard, so please check with us first if not using one of our vehicles.
The LGV theory test must be taken, we will help you prepare for this. This may not be required if upgrading from a C to C+E.
Driving an HGV/LGV is about road safety, and carrying your load in a way that it arrives at the destination in the expected condition. Safe driving and maneuvering skills are required to pass the test.
